Since a fire at the Charlotte Street in 2006, the surgery has been
located on the old hospital site at Nithbank. The surgery set up as
a general practice surgery since the 1880’s serving the people of
Dumfries. The original surgery building was built in the 1840’s and
was a branch of the Western Bank for many years. About 1885 a Dr Clark
set up a practice in the building and was later joined by Dr Joe Hunter.
He was Liberal M.P. for the area as well as a G.P. Dr Hunter retired
after the First World War and his nephew Dr AJ Gordon-Hunter came to
Charlotte Street about 1919. He was a G.P., Surgeon, Police Doctor,
Prison Doctor, delivered babies in Charnwood and was Doctor in charge
of the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Greenbrae Loaning. He lived
in Charlotte Street until 1953 when he moved to Glencaple. In 1958
when he retired he sold the Building to Dr’s MacNish, Murray, Carrie
and Hutchison for £5300 and this included a large garden, which is now
the car park adjacent to the surgery.
We are currently working with the Health Board to progress a move to
include a move to purpose built premises. We are hoping this build will
be completed by 2010.
The NHS is a very large part of the public sector. A full list of
local General Practices can be found on the web site below or click

Surgeries are by appointment only but run for most of the day, Monday - Friday.
Office hours 8.30 - 5.00 pm Monday - Friday.
We also offer early morning surgeries from 7:10 a.m.on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
There is also an emergency surgery each day at 11.00am for which appointments
are only available on the day. This surgery is only for things that can't wait until a
regular surgery. We will always see patients with urgent problems the same day but
cannot guarantee that it will be your usual doctor.
You may make an appointment to see any doctor you wish but, if possible, it is
better to try to arrange to see the same doctor, especially if you have a chronic
condition.
You can make an appointment in person or by phoning the surgery.
Doctors are also available for telephone consultations from
10.45 - 11.00am.
|
|
We request that if at all possible you attend the surgery to see the doctor. Home
visits take much longer and the surgery is better equipped for examination and
tests. However, if you are unable to attend please phone before 10.00 am (except
in an emergency). The receptionist will ask for some details to allow the doctors to
prioritise the visits. This information is confidential. If a doctor is available, they may
speak to you to get more details.
As far as possible the doctor who visits will be your usual doctor but this cannot be
guaranteed.
|
|
If you require a doctor outside surgery hours, phone the surgery number and you
will be put through to the 'After Hours Medical Service'. The receptionist will need
to take some details - name, address, phone number, as well as some details about
the problem. This is so that the doctor has some information as to which calls to
deal with first. The doctor will phone you back within minutes and advise you.
If you require to be seen this will be done in the 'Out of Hours Centre' at DGRI. If the doctor feels you are too ill to come to the centre. He/she
will arrange for a doctor to visit.
The Afterhours Medical Service is run by the locoum doctors and all the doctors
involved are employed by D&G Health Board. It offers an excellent standard of medical care but it
is only for emergencies that cannot wait until the surgery is open.
